Mark Anthony’s Classic Comeback
By Steve Blechman
When the Classic Physique Division was introduced in 2016, it was hailed by many as a return to the ideals of days gone by, when the best bodies were judged as superior rather than the biggest or the freakiest. The ‘80s was a decade many feel reached the pinnacle for physiques that exuded both classic beauty and rugged power, as witnessed in Bob Paris, Mohamed Makkawy, Berry de Mey, Lee Labrada, Francis Benfatto, and of course, the man who held the Mr. Olympia title for most of the 1980s, Lee Haney.
Hi-Tech athlete Mark Anthony is on the cover of this month’s MD as a tribute to more streamlined and classic physiques, as he transitions to compete in Classic Physique this year as a contemporary version of those legendary athletes. Mark was one of the first men to earn pro status in Men’s Physique when the division was introduced in 2011 and went on the next year to become its first Olympia champion. After six pro wins, he drifted away from competition for a few years but announced his return to competition in 2020. Find out how this popular athlete with the dynamite physique plans to return with an entirely new look in “Mark Anthony: Classic Comeback.”
The Classic Physique division has exploded in popularity through the years, and as Ron Harris explains in “The Rise of Classic Physique,” the fans also embraced Classic, a breath of fresh air in a sport where aesthetics and posing presentation had sometimes been lacking in recent decades.
Some pretty crazy things happened in bodybuilding in 2019; what could be in store for 2020? Will Shawn Rhoden be back for blood, foaming at the mouth to get his Olympia title back after being forced to sit on the sidelines in 2019? What’s the inside word on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’sAthleticon event? Ron Harris and Giles Thomas put their collective 50-plus years in the sport and industry to the test in “2020 Visions: 8 Predictions for the New Year.”

Maybe whatever you’re doing either never worked for you, or is no longer producing results. You need to make some changes if you want to see any real difference in your physique, and MD has some great ideas to get things moving in the right direction in “18 Changes to Pack on Muscle and Get Ripped in 2020!”
As he begins his prep for the 2020 Arnold Classic, Steve Kuclo one of the favorites to win. George “Da Bull” Peterson was one of the very best Classic Physique competitors— winning the 2019 Arnold Classic and placing third in the Classic Physique Olympia the same year.
